Adjustments, or manipulation as they’re sometimes referred to, are the minor movement of vertebrae in the spine. The objective of this movement is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of place for a number of reasons ranging from normal daily activity to trauma such as a car accident. The chiropractic adjustment helps reestablish normal neural connection from the body to the brain and from the brain to the body; without which, normal function cannot occur. This is the main tenet of Chiropractic care.
What Is Low Force Instrument Adjusting?
Many people who have not been under chiropractic care or have only experienced the traditional chiropractic hands on adjustment where a manual thrust with the chiropractor’s hands on the spine will produce the spinal adjustment along with an audible “pop”, may not be aware that technology has provided new ways of adjusting the spine without the thrusting or “popping”.
The Velocity Adjustor
This is a hand held mechanical device that rapidly delivers very quick but extremely gentle adjustment to the joints of the body. It is faster than human hands and, in fact, can adjust several times a second with the patient feeling a sensation of of being gently tapped. No audible joint noise or being pushes is heard or felt.
The Velocity Adjustor has several advantages over manual hands on adjusting. The most obvious for the patient is that they can completely relax as they are adjusted as there are no sudden, quick thrust. While the traditional hands on adjustment is very safe and effective and many people do, in fact prefer this approach, some people are reluctant to go under chiropractic care because it simply scares them or some just have a hard time relaxing to allow for the chiropractor to deliver a good adjustment. For some, it’s just a matter of personal taste.
From the chiropractor’s perspective, it allows for multiple adjustments to be delivered on the same spinal or extremity mis-alignment (“Subluxations”) very quickly. When a shoulder, for example, is not moving correctly within it’s joint normal range of motion, it can literally be adjusted in 10-15 different directions (or vectors) in just a few seconds. The shoulder joint is ball and socket joint and moves in an infinite number of directions. While spinal vertebrae are not as mobile as the shoulder, they still have a multitude of directions they move in or conversely, need to be adjusted in.
